It aims to provide a platform for collaboration, advocacy, and support among various stakeholders involved in refugee protection and assistance.
We are a Southern Africa regional refugee-led organisation forum established by refugee and asylum seekers on the 1st May 2024 and registered in South Africa as NPO with registration no. 311-955 NPO in terms of Non-profit Organization Act 1997(Act no. 71 of 1997), registered with South Africa Revenue Services (SARS) with Tax and NPC with registration No. 2024/381936/08 with our Headquarters at Office B15 Court Chambers, 623 Govan Mbeki Avenue, North End, Gqeberha, Eastern Cape - South Africa.
SAROF's mission is to amplify the voices of refugees, asylum seekers and forcibly displaced community, promote their protection, and support their integration into host communities. We aim to foster collaboration, coordination, and knowledge-sharing among our member organizations to ensure a comprehensive and effective response to the needs of refugees and asylum seekers in the Southern Africa region in following scope of work:
To amplify the voices of refugees, asylum seekers and forcibly displaced community, promote their protection, and support their integration into host communities. We aim to foster collaboration, coordination, and knowledge-sharing among our member organizations to ensure a comprehensive and effective response to the needs of refugees and asylum seekers in the Southern Africa region.
To become the champion of change in advocating and supporting our members organisations on resources and information sharing.
We uphold strong moral principles and ethical conduct. This means acting with honesty and fairness, even when it's difficult. Building trust and credibility. People are more likely to cooperate and follow someone they believe in.
We believe in the openness and accessibility of information. Sharing information openly fosters a sense of shared purpose and reduces suspicion.
Fostering accountability and reducing corruption. When things are transparent, it's harder to hide wrongdoing.
We take full responsibility for actions and decisions. This includes admitting mistakes and learning from them.
Ensuring effective use of resources. Being accountable means using resources wisely and achieving goals.
We provide vision, direction, and motivation. Leaders set the course and inspire others to follow.
Inspiring and empowering others to achieve goals. Leaders help people reach their full potential and work together effectively.
We are guided by international human rights and refugee protection laws, under the framework of several key United Nations conventions that govern the rights and protections of refugees, asylum seekers, and displaced people. The most relevant UN conventions include:
The 1951 Refugee Convention: Also known as the Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees, this is the core international legal document that defines who is a refugee, their rights, and the legal obligations of states to protect them.
The 1967 Protocol Relating to the Status of Refugees: This protocol removes geographical and temporal restrictions from the 1951 Refugee Convention, broadening its scope to apply to refugees globally, not just those displaced in Europe after World War II.
The 1969 OAU Convention Governing the Specific Aspects of Refugee Problems in Africa: This is a regional complement to the 1951 Convention, adapted to the African context, providing additional provisions for the protection of refugees in Africa.
SAROF’s work in advocacy, capacity building, and resource mobilization likely aligns with these conventions to ensure that the rights and protections outlined for refugees and displaced people are upheld.
